Mr. Ulman, a visiting trainer at Winchester Farm, passed away at the age of 84 on November 28, 2009 in his home in Caracas Venezuela.
Mr. Ulmann received the title of Professor of Equitation in Switzerland after WW II. He studied in Warendorf, Germany at the "Deutsche Reitschule" with Harry Boldt, General Horst Niemack and M.M. Brinkmann. During that period he earned the silver riding medal of Germany.
Mr. Ulmann subsequently spent 3 years in Denmark working with the Danish Olympic dressage team assisting Colonel C. O. Petersen, Knud Hansen, Lis Harte and Git Galbo. He then joined the Swiss Cavalry where he completed his "Bexeiter" in Lausanne under Mr. John Wagienene. As part of his training in the Cavalry, he spent a year with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna where he was coached by Colonel Alois Podhajsky.
Mr. Ulmann then immigrated to Venezuela in order to develop the foundation for the equestrian sports. In that capacity he became a member of the Venezuelan Equestrian Federation, the dressage committee, and served as a dressage judge.
Mr. Ulmann worked in the US as a freelance dressage coach since 1982. His best known student is Mary Alice Malone of Iron Springs Farm whom he coached for many years on her breeding and performance stallions. He was also a popular international clinician and travel regularly to instruct in Chile, Peru, Columbia and Venezuela.
Mr Ulmann specialized in assisting riders thru the systematic dressage training scale as developed by the German riding system. He offered a unique program for both horse and rider that included the classical usage of work in long lining, on the pillars, under saddle and over cavalletties. His systematic approach was geared towards riders and horses from novice to Grand Prix level for the amateur and professional alike.
